Sam Ruthe has made history by becoming the fastest 16-year-old to run the mile, clocking an impressive time of 3:53.36 at the Pak’nSave Cooks International Classic in Whanganui on January 24, 2024. This remarkable performance not only set a new record for his age group but also surpassed the previous best of 3:55.44 established by Australia’s Cam Myers.

Ruthe’s achievement comes less than a year after he became the youngest athlete to break the four-minute barrier in the mile. His record-setting run occurred during the second stop of athletics’ 2026 Summer Circuit, showcasing his rapid rise in the sport. Despite Ruthe’s exceptional performance, the overall victory at the event went to his training partner, Sam Tanner, who executed a powerful final sprint to take the title.

Ruthe’s Rise Among the Greats

Ruthe’s time positions him seventh on the all-time New Zealand list for the mile, surpassing the legendary Sir Peter Snell. The young athlete’s record is a testament to his hard work and dedication, as he continues to break barriers set by previous generations of runners. Tanner, maintaining his dominance in the event, achieved his fourth consecutive victory at the New Zealand mile championships, a significant milestone since the competition’s reestablishment.

After their performances in Whanganui, both Ruthe and Tanner are set to travel to the United States for a series of indoor races. They will then return to New Zealand, where they will compete in the season finale, Track Stars, at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships on March 7, 2024, at Trusts Arena in Henderson, west Auckland.

As Ruthe continues to push the limits of his potential, the athletics community eagerly anticipates what he will achieve next. His record-breaking run not only solidifies his place in history but also inspires young athletes around the world to pursue their dreams with determination and vigor.
