Activists Raise Morning Star Flag, Demand Independence for West Papua
Activists raised the unofficial Morning Star flag in a demonstration that underscores the ongoing struggle for independence in West Papua. The event, which attracted a crowd of supporters, aimed to draw attention to the human rights violations faced by the people in the region under Indonesian governance.
At the gathering, Dr. Cleaver emphasized the colonial implications of Indonesia’s control over West Papua. He stated, “People who stand in the way of the Indonesian government’s progress to strip the land of resources and displace the rightful people are murdered, raped and tortured.” This powerful statement highlighted the severity of the situation faced by those advocating for self-determination.
Cr. Marie Laufiso contributed to the event by reading excerpts from the Declaration of Whāingaroa, which emerged from the Te Hui Oranga o te Moana nui a Kiwa, a conference focused on the wellbeing of the Pacific held in 2024. Laufiso’s remarks reinforced a collective commitment: “We stand united against genocide in West Papua, Kanaky, and everywhere, noting that the training and weapons testing for the continuation of such atrocities is carried out in our region.”
The rally was organized by West Papua Action Ōtepoti, with co-convener Barbara Frame stressing the dire human rights conditions in West Papua. She asserted, “They do not have even the basic human right of self-determination because they have been under illegal occupation by Indonesia for such a very long time.” Frame’s comments resonated with many attendees who voiced their support for the West Papuan cause.
The raising of the Morning Star flag serves as a potent symbol of resistance for those advocating for the people of West Papua. It represents not only their quest for independence but also a broader struggle against colonialism and oppression. The event marks a critical moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding human rights and self-determination in the region.
As the international community continues to grapple with issues of sovereignty and self-determination, the plight of West Papua remains a pressing concern. Activists and supporters alike are determined to keep the issue in the spotlight, seeking justice and recognition for the rights of those living under foreign rule.
