Ministry of Justice Issues Incorrect Fine Texts to 8,000 Recipients

The Ministry of Justice has acknowledged a system error that resulted in incorrect fine texts being sent to approximately 8,000 individuals on Monday, October 30, 2023. These messages erroneously included information regarding a fine amount of $135.00, the ministry’s bank account details, a reference number, and the surname of each recipient.
Tracey Baguely, the ministry’s group manager for National Service Delivery, explained that such notifications are typically sent to individuals with outstanding fines. “In this case, a system error meant a message went to approximately 8,000 people. Some individuals may have received the same message multiple times, up to eight,” Baguely stated.
The Ministry confirmed that no personal information was compromised during this incident. Baguely reassured the public that the issue has been addressed and resolved. For those who may have made payments based on the incorrect messages, the ministry has promised that refunds will be issued.
Recipients of the text messages have been advised that the notifications can be deleted. However, for anyone uncertain about the situation, the ministry has provided a contact number: 0800 434 637 (0800 4 FINES). This helpline is available for those seeking further clarification or assistance regarding the erroneous messages.
