The board of the Naval Point Club has issued a firm statement regarding harassment and bullying within its membership, declaring it will not tolerate gossip or malicious rumours. The email, sent last week, addressed growing concerns about behaviour that undermines the club’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment.

In the communication, the board highlighted its ongoing efforts to ensure that the club remains accessible and supportive to all members. It stated, “We are, therefore, saddened to learn that there are those within the membership who seek to behave in a way that is not in keeping with what we are trying to achieve.” The board emphasized that such behaviour constitutes bullying and harassment, reinforcing its position on maintaining a respectful atmosphere.

The message from the board underscored its legal obligations as an incorporated society to protect staff, volunteers, members, and visitors from harassment and actions that could damage the club’s reputation. The email made it explicitly clear that the club is prepared to take action, including the potential termination of membership for those who engage in such conduct.

Since taking on the role of chair two years ago, Saunders has prioritized inclusion, aiming to shift the club’s image away from its historical reputation as an “old boys club.” She expressed that this proactive approach is essential for fostering a positive community within the club. “This is the board being very proactive, telling people that there are repercussions and one of them is we can terminate your membership,” she stated.

While Saunders refrained from discussing specific incidents or naming individuals involved, she acknowledged that only a “handful” of members are at the centre of the issues. Her comments reflect a broader concern that ongoing negativity, rather than constructive dialogue, has been detrimental to the club’s environment. “Talking about problems and not solving problems doesn’t get us anywhere,” she asserted.
