New Playground Opens in Barry Curtis Park, Enhancing Community Life
The Howick Local Board and representatives from Ngai Tai ki Tamaki officially opened a new children’s playground at Barry Curtis Park in Flat Bush, enhancing recreational options for families in the area. This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve community facilities and support local youth.
Community Engagement and Development Initiatives
In his inaugural month as a member of the Howick Local Board, Deputy Chairperson Kai Zeng has focused on listening to the community and implementing ideas that foster growth. With a population representing 9.5 percent of Auckland’s residents, the local board prioritizes addressing the needs of its constituents.
Chairperson Bruce Kendall and Zeng recently met with the team behind the Ormiston Library and Community Centre project to discuss strategies for overcoming obstacles to its delivery. Their involvement underscores the board’s commitment to transparency and community partnerships.
Additionally, Howick hosted an information session regarding PC120, a regional project aimed at enhancing transport and infrastructure. This session, supported by local ward councillors and staff, reflects the board’s ongoing commitment to keep residents informed and engaged in local development.
In addressing housing needs, the local board advocates for legislation that aligns with community requirements. Zeng emphasized the importance of creating a thriving environment that benefits individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures.
Supporting Youth and Community Initiatives
Supporting youth remains a high priority for the Howick Local Board. The board actively collaborates with various local organizations, including the Howick Youth Council, which runs initiatives like Adulting 101 and the Junior Youth Summit. These programs aim to equip young people with essential life skills and foster civic engagement.
Other partnerships include Pest Free Howick, which promotes environmental education in schools, and Arts Out East, dedicated to supporting local artists and cultural projects. Furthermore, Business East Tamaki represents over 3,300 businesses and 2,100 property owners, recently hosting events like Future Connect to prepare youth for the workforce.
Zeng also highlighted his participation in youth-oriented initiatives such as the Let Me Speak civic engagement panel and the Rangatahi Life Ally Workshop. These efforts aim to empower young individuals and strengthen community ties.
To enhance community outreach, Auckland Council has launched a Local Boards Instagram channel, showcasing local events and services. Starting in 2024, the board plans to facilitate more in-person discussions at school assemblies and community gatherings to gather feedback directly from residents.
As the Howick Local Board begins to formulate its 2026 Local Board Plan, community input will be essential in shaping the future direction of the region. Zeng invites residents to share their thoughts to help build a vibrant and inclusive east Auckland.
