New Zealand Voters Weigh In on Politicians with Holiday Poll
New Zealand voters have expressed their opinions on the country’s political landscape in a recent poll conducted by The Post and Freshwater Strategy, in collaboration with Infrastructure New Zealand. The survey, which took place from December 5 to 10, 2025, highlights concerns over economic issues while also revealing preferences for politicians in a festive context.
The poll indicates that a significant majority of voters, approximately 56%, prioritize relief from the cost of living. Healthcare follows closely at 50%, while 28% express concerns regarding unemployment and job security. This data reflects a national mood that is far from festive, as many New Zealanders grapple with financial pressures.
In terms of political trust, the Labour Party, led by Chris Hipkins, is currently preferred over the National Party, headed by Christopher Luxon. The Labour-led government enjoys a 15-point lead in managing household pressures, alongside a strong reputation in healthcare and environmental issues. This marks a significant shift from the August 2023 poll, where the National Party held a commanding 23-point lead.
Amid these serious evaluations, the poll also posed light-hearted questions that captured the public’s imagination, including who would make the best Santa Claus. The results provide insight into the personalities voters admire, as well as their sentiments regarding the current political environment.
Public Sentiment on Political Leadership
In the race for preferred prime minister, Hipkins maintains his lead over Luxon with 45% to 39%. Notably, the proportion of voters undecided between the two candidates has decreased to 10%, suggesting a growing consensus among voters regarding their leadership preferences.
Despite the preference for Hipkins, over half of the respondents, 52%, believe the country is on the wrong track, a slight decrease from previous months. The National-led coalition government is blamed by 25% of voters for the current economic situation, while the previous Labour government is cited by 21%. The Reserve Bank is also under scrutiny, with 9% of voters attributing blame to it for economic challenges.
As voters reflect on their leaders, the poll results reveal a nostalgic yearning for past politicians. If New Zealand were to elect a president directly, the top three choices are former prime minister Jacinda Ardern at 16%, followed by Winston Peters at 12%, and Luxon at 11%.
Festive Rankings and the Naughty List
The survey also featured a whimsical “Nice and Naughty” list, revealing who voters believe deserve accolades or criticism this holiday season. Topping the nice list is renowned rugby player Ritchie McCaw, followed closely by Jacinda Ardern and pop icon Taylor Swift. McCaw’s reputation as a symbol of integrity and humility resonates deeply with the public.
Conversely, the naughty list includes controversial figures such as Prince Andrew and Elon Musk, along with David Seymour and Luxon. This ranking reflects voters’ sentiments towards these figures, emphasizing their perceptions of character and public behavior.
When it comes to the festive tradition of extra pudding, respondents identified Hipkins, Peters, and Chloë Swarbrick as deserving of a second helping. In contrast, Rawiri Waititi from Te Pāti Māori did not receive any votes, highlighting the varied opinions on political figures.
Luxon is also seen as the leader most likely to need a holiday, with voters suggesting he may take work with him, reflecting a broader perception of work-life balance among politicians.
In light of the poll results, Winston Peters remarked, “We’re not ungrateful for the people’s judgement. To everyone, have a very happy Christmas and a positive New Year.”
As New Zealand approaches the holiday season, this poll serves as a snapshot of the public’s mood regarding both serious issues and lighter reflections on its political figures.
