Peeni Henare, representing the Labour Party, has officially conceded the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election to his opponent, Oriini Kaipara of Te Pāti Māori. Henare made this announcement as the vote count reached 80 percent, revealing that he had garnered just over half the votes compared to Kaipara’s total.

Kaipara was met with cheers and applause upon arriving at her party’s election night event in Te Atatu Peninsula. A spirited crowd of Te Pāti Māori supporters had gathered, eager to witness the election results alongside the live broadcast of an All Blacks match. Embraced warmly by party co-leaders and supporters, Kaipara began her speech with a traditional song. She emphasized her gratitude to the crowd by saying, “Takutai, mōu tēnei,” which translates to “Takutai, this is for you.”

The by-election was necessitated by the unexpected passing of Te Pāti Māori MP Takutai Tarsh Kemp in June 2023. The Tāmaki Makaurau electorate, which extends from the Waitākere Ranges to Bucklands Beach, encompasses a significant portion of Auckland’s southern and eastern suburbs, along with Waiheke Island. It is noteworthy that this electorate registers the highest average annual household income among Māori electorates, standing at nearly $130,000. Conversely, it also has the highest number of individuals receiving the jobseeker benefit.

As the evening progressed, Kaipara expressed her appreciation for the “toil and belief” of her supporters. The turnout and enthusiasm displayed at the event reflect the community’s engagement in this crucial electoral process.

This by-election marks a significant moment for Te Pāti Māori, as they continue to build on their representation within the New Zealand political landscape. With the results now confirmed, attention will undoubtedly shift towards the implications of this outcome for the party and the electorate in the coming months.

More updates are expected as the political landscape evolves following this decisive election.
