Sir Ian McKellen Confirms Visit to Mining Site Following Controversy

Sir Ian McKellen has accepted an invitation to visit a controversial mining site in New Zealand after initially cancelling due to concerns over misinformation in a public statement from Santana Minerals. The acclaimed actor expressed his desire to better understand the situation after receiving expert advice from Sustainable Tarras, an environmental group that raised significant questions about the project.

In an interview with the Otago Daily Times, McKellen explained that his initial decision to decline the visit stemmed from a published opinion piece by Damian Spring, chief executive of Santana Minerals, which he deemed misleading. “I thought that the only way to get to the bottom of it was to take up the offer and see what explanations I got from Santana,” he stated. He emphasized that without hearing both sides of the argument, he could not form a well-informed opinion. “I will be going this time with a lot more questions than I would have had if I’d taken up the original offer,” he added.

On Tuesday, Spring criticized McKellen and fellow actor Sir Sam Neill in his opinion piece, referring to them as “two highly vocal knights of the realm.” He noted that while McKellen accepted the invitation, Neill had yet to confirm his plans to visit. Spring wrote, “One has quietly ignored us (or our email is in his spam folder), while the other is yet to confirm dates.”

Contrary to Spring’s assertion, McKellen clarified that he accepted the invitation the day after it was extended, with the visit date confirmed the same day. Santana Minerals later stated that a visit date had not been established at the time the opinion piece was published, but that the invitation remained open.

Sir Sam Neill has also voiced his concerns over what he calls “misinformation” from the mining company. He told the Otago Daily Times that the last communication he received from Santana was in August 2024. “I was abroad, but invited them to ‘keep in touch’,” Neill said, adding, “I never heard from them again. Misinformation. They are full of it.”

Neill’s office provided emails indicating that Santana had reached out to discuss potential meetings about the project, but the correspondence did not include an offer for a site visit. His office responded three days later, stating that he was filming overseas until the end of the year but welcomed further communication.

In response to inquiries about their last correspondence with Neill, Santana Minerals referred to a previous statement from October 2023. In that statement, Spring mentioned that the company had reached out to Neill earlier in 2024, offering a detailed briefing on the project, which he did not accept.

Santana Minerals, which claims to be developing “one of the country’s most significant regional projects,” defended its position, stating, “It is not our role to chase high-profile commentators for meetings they have declined.” The company added that it had invited Neill to clarify inaccuracies in his public comments, suggesting that he might reconsider his stance like McKellen.

As the situation unfolds, both actors remain at the forefront of a growing debate over the mining project, which has drawn significant public interest and scrutiny.
