Wayne Brown Dominates Auckland Mayoral Debate, Leaving Rivals Behind

The recent Auckland mayoral debate at the North Harbour Netball Centre showcased incumbent mayor Wayne Brown as a dominant force, overshadowing his opponents, particularly Kerrin Leoni. During the event organized by Grey Power, Brown’s lengthy responses and assertive style captured the audience’s attention, leaving little room for his challengers to engage with voters effectively.

Brown’s approach at the debate contrasted sharply with Leoni’s more measured delivery. While she provided concise answers to key questions within her allocated time, Brown seized the opportunity to elaborate on various topics, including infrastructure and housing policies. His performance highlighted his ability to command the room, often diverting attention from Leoni, who struggled to maintain her presence on stage.

Leoni, a first-term councillor for the Whau ward, attempted to address concerns over housing intensification but faced limited questions on the subject. While she affirmed her support for increasing high-rise developments around transport corridors, her responses often lacked depth. In comparison, Brown responded to similar queries with a more aggressive stance, dismissing the government’s plans for two million new homes as unrealistic.

During the debate, Brown claimed, “I’ve told Labour and National: ‘do not cooperate again, because what you came up with was stupid, it’s ridiculous and has to go.’” He emphasized that housing developments would primarily occur near transport hubs rather than in less desirable areas. His assertive rhetoric, however, was met with skepticism from some audience members, particularly regarding his comments on seismic building standards.

Brown also revealed that he receives approximately 85 emails daily from constituents, though he admitted he does not personally read them. His candidness about his engagement with the public reflected an attempt to connect with the audience at the Grey Power meeting, where he acknowledged his age—79 years—and expressed a desire to cater to older residents.

The debate came at a crucial time, with just three weeks remaining until the election on October 11, 2023. Brown’s visibility in the campaign has been significant, with extensive advertising on popular media platforms and numerous billboards across the city. In contrast, Leoni has been less visible, relying on social media and a modest number of signs to promote her candidacy.

Despite the challenges, Leoni has actively participated in all candidate meetings, outlining her policy proposals, which include reviewing council contracts and improving transport links. She aims to reduce projected rate rises from 3.5 percent to 2.5 percent, contingent upon achieving savings. While her campaign emphasizes accountability and visibility, she has yet to effectively counter Brown’s dominance in public perception.

Polling data reflects the disparity in voter support, with Brown reportedly holding 50 percent of the vote from a July survey, while Leoni trailed at just 8 percent. Another poll cited by independent candidate Eric Chuah indicated Brown at 24 percent, with both Leoni and Chuah at 18 percent. Leoni believes the low voter turnout, with only 45,450 ballots cast as of Friday evening, may indicate a lack of enthusiasm for Brown’s re-election.

As the campaign progresses, Leoni must find ways to elevate her profile among voters. At the Grey Power meeting, she refrained from aggressive criticism of Brown, instead choosing to present her policies on various issues, including transport and housing. Her strategy aims to resonate with an audience that values strong leadership and accountability.
