Smartphone Sales Projected to Rise with AI Mobiles Leading Market

Global smartphone sales are expected to see a modest increase in 2025, with a report by the research firm IDC projecting a rise of 1% compared to the previous year. This translates to total sales reaching approximately 1.24 billion units. The anticipated growth occurs despite ongoing global economic challenges, driven largely by unexpectedly strong demand in regions such as the United States, the Middle East, and Africa.
Apple is poised to lead the market, with projections indicating a 3.9% increase in iPhone sales this year compared to 2024. The company’s continued success reflects its strong brand loyalty and innovative features, which resonate well with consumers across various demographics.
Rise of AI-Enabled Devices
A significant trend noted in the report is the expected surge in AI-enabled smartphones. IDC forecasts that 370 million AI-enabled mobile phones will be sold in 2025, which will account for 30% of total smartphone sales. This segment is projected to expand dramatically, with the share of AI devices expected to climb to 70% by 2029.
The rise of AI capabilities in smartphones reflects a broader technological shift, with consumers increasingly seeking devices that offer smarter functionalities. This trend aligns with the ongoing development of artificial intelligence across various sectors, making AI-enabled phones a key area of growth in the mobile market.
Growth of Foldable Phones
The report also highlights the evolving landscape of foldable smartphones. IDC anticipates a 6% year-over-year growth rate for foldable devices in both 2025 and 2026, followed by an even more significant 11% increase in 2027 as this category matures. Despite this growth, foldable phones are expected to represent only 3% of total smartphone shipments by 2029, indicating that while they are gaining traction, they will remain a niche segment compared to traditional smartphones.
Overall, the smartphone market appears to be on a path of gradual recovery and innovation, with AI and foldable technologies driving future sales. As companies adapt to these trends, the landscape of mobile devices is likely to continue evolving, catering to the changing preferences of consumers worldwide.
