Auckland FC has made a strong statement in the inaugural match of the Oceania Professional League, defeating South Island United 3-0 at Eden Park on March 16, 2024. The victory showcased the team’s skill and determination in front of a crowd of 7,459 fans who witnessed the first inter-island derby of the season.

Auckland’s Scoring Surge

The match saw goals from Oscar Faulds, Bailey Ferguson, and Liam Gillion, setting the tone for Auckland’s campaign. Faulds opened the scoring in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Everton O’Leary’s attempt from outside the box was parried. Despite earlier missed opportunities, Faulds reacted quickly to give Auckland the lead.

In the second half, South Island United, a new club formed for this competition, pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, they struggled to convert their efforts into clear chances. Auckland’s defense held firm, and Ferguson sealed the result with a goal in the 83rd minute, finishing decisively from a cutback by Jonathan Robinson, an American fullback.

Gillion, who was part of Auckland’s contracted A-League Men squad, had a lively performance. Although he did not score from open play despite several attempts, he made his mark by converting a penalty awarded for a handball by South Island’s Emiliano Tade in the 88th minute.

Team Goals and Aspirations

Following the match, Auckland’s captain Tass Mourdoukoutas, a former defender with the Western Sydney Wanderers and Perth Glory, expressed the team’s commitment to building on their success. He stated, “Wearing this jersey means a lot to myself and I know it means a lot to everyone else out there.” Mourdoukoutas emphasized the team’s aim to replicate their A-League Men counterparts’ success, who won the Premiers’ Plate in their inaugural season last year.

Earlier that day, the Pro League witnessed its first goalscorer when Alex Saniel of Vanuatu United netted in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Fiji’s Bula FC. Saniel’s opening goal was quickly answered by Bula’s captain, Roy Krishna, leveling the match. Nabil Begg’s 71st-minute goal looked like it would secure victory for Bula, but a late error from goalkeeper Didier Desprez allowed the match to end in a dramatic draw.

The action continues at Eden Park, with Tahiti United facing South Melbourne at 13:00 local time, followed by PNG Hekari taking on the Solomon Kings at 17:00. Auckland FC will return to the pitch on March 19, 2024, at North Harbour Stadium, where they will face Vanuatu United, while South Island United will compete against Bula FC in the early match.

With this dominant performance, Auckland FC has set a promising tone for the season ahead in the Oceania Professional League.
