South Africa’s Coach Uses AI to Address All Blacks Coaching Speculation
The head coach of South Africa’s national rugby team, Rassie Erasmus, has stirred controversy by sharing an AI-generated video featuring his attack coach, Mzwandile Stick, which humorously references a famous scene from the film The Wolf of Wall Street. The video showcases Stick declaring, “I’m not f…ing leaving,” in a moment that echoes a passionate speech delivered by the character Jordan Belfort, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. This post comes in the wake of significant coaching changes within New Zealand rugby, particularly the firing of Scott Robertson after only two seasons in charge of the All Blacks.
The speculation surrounding Stick’s potential candidacy for the All Blacks coaching position has intensified following Robertson’s dismissal on October 19, 2023. His name has surfaced as a strong contender to partner with long-time coaching associate Jamie Joseph, who is also being considered for the role. The All Blacks are preparing for a comprehensive tour of South Africa scheduled for August and September, making the timing of this speculation particularly critical.
Erasmus’ playful social media post may have dampened expectations regarding Stick’s prospects. Stick has played a crucial role in the Springboks’ recent success, which includes a historic victory over the All Blacks in Wellington in 2022. Erasmus has previously gained attention for his active presence on social media, notably during the 2021 British & Irish Lions series, where he publicly criticized officiating decisions.
In recent weeks, Erasmus has continued to engage with fans online, even sharing videos that humorously depict his experiences following celebrations after the Springboks’ victory over Argentina in the Rugby Championship. These interactions highlight his unconventional approach to coaching and public relations in the sport.
As New Zealand Rugby prepares to announce Robertson’s successor, Jamie Joseph remains the frontrunner for the role. The Highlanders are reportedly seeking a new head coach, which may further complicate the situation. Other names mentioned in connection with the All Blacks job include former coach Joe Schmidt and Dave Rennie, although Schmidt is currently under contract with the Wallabies until the conclusion of their July test matches.
With significant changes on the horizon for New Zealand rugby, the unfolding events will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike. The dynamics of the coaching landscape are poised to evolve further as the All Blacks navigate their preparations for future challenges.
