Auckland FC Seeks Redemption Against Newcastle Jets After Surprising Loss
Auckland FC is gearing up for a crucial match against the Newcastle Jets on Thursday, motivated by a desire for revenge following a surprising home defeat to the Jets in late November. This unexpected loss marked a significant moment for the team, as they were defeated 2-1 at Go Media Stadium, a venue where they typically dominate. Assistant coach Danny Hay expressed the team’s determination to rectify this setback, stating, “It has to be about revenge. We know we owe them one, after them being the only team that beat us. We don’t like losing games, especially at home.”
The previous encounter was not only disappointing but also unusual. The Jets came into the match sitting at the bottom of the A-League standings, yet managed to secure a victory despite challenging conditions, including heavy rain that left the pitch flooded for a portion of the second half. This defeat represented just the third time in 19 matches that Auckland FC has lost at home, a stark contrast to their typically strong performance on familiar turf.
Historically, Auckland FC has faced defeat at home only twice in the previous season—to a formidable Western United side and an experienced Melbourne Victory team. The loss to Newcastle, however, stood out as it defied expectations. The Jets, despite their struggles, showcased a dynamic style of play, scoring a league-high 20 goals this season, which included notable victories against teams like Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory.
Hay acknowledged that Auckland FC’s preparation fell short in the previous match. “We don’t think we prepared as well mentally as we usually do, and the boys were just a little bit off,” he noted. The adverse weather conditions certainly played a role, but Hay credited Newcastle as deserving winners that day.
In response to the earlier defeat, the Auckland FC squad has ramped up their training intensity, focusing particularly on defensive strategies to counteract Newcastle’s swift attacking style. Hay emphasized the need for vigilance, stating, “When we are in possession, they are a very dangerous team. They counterattack with a lot of pace, so we need to ensure our rest defense is spot on.”
The team recently enjoyed an unexpected break after their scheduled match against Sydney FC on December 27 was postponed due to pitch issues at Leichhardt Oval. Goalkeeper Michael Woud reflected positively on the situation, appreciating the opportunity to spend Christmas at home. “It was a good surprise. We wanted to play Sydney, but being at home was a nice reward for us being top of the table.”
As the team prepares to face the Jets, Auckland FC is eager to start 2026 positively. Coach Steve Corica, who missed a recent training session due to illness, is expected to have a full squad available, with all injured players returning to fitness. Hay reiterated the team’s objective: “We want to win. We want to pick up three points, especially with a big crowd expected to turn up.”
In their recent history, Auckland FC has faced a few notable home defeats, including:
– December 21, 2024: vs Western United 1-4
– May 24, 2025: vs Melbourne Victory 0-2 (semi-final)
– November 29, 2025: vs Newcastle Jets 1-2
As Auckland FC takes the field against Newcastle Jets, the stakes are high, and the team is ready to demonstrate their resolve and reclaim their standing in the league.
