Cricket Legends Demand Urgent Care for Imran Khan’s Health
Prominent cricket figures have expressed significant concern regarding the health of former cricketer and politician Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned. A collective of 14 legendary cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, has urged the Pakistan government to ensure Khan receives adequate medical treatment and fair legal proceedings.
The letter, sent to government officials, emphasizes the need for appropriate care and dignified treatment in accordance with international human rights standards. The letter highlights alarming reports indicating that the 73-year-old Khan has suffered a loss of nearly 85 percent vision in his right eye, which has allegedly been exacerbated by medical neglect during his time at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Support from Fellow Cricketers
In their correspondence, the group of former international captains asserted that as fellow athletes, they understand the importance of values such as fair play, honour, and respect. They believe a figure of Khan’s prominence, being a former national leader and a global sports icon, deserves treatment that reflects his status. The signatories of the letter include notable names such as Michael Atherton, Allan Border, Greg Chappell, Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd, and Steve Waugh, among others.
The letter calls on authorities to uphold principles of decency and justice, reinforcing that the treatment of Khan should align with both the dignity owed to him and the broader standards of human rights.
Background on Imran Khan’s Imprisonment
Khan, who captained the Pakistan cricket team to victory in the 1992 World Cup, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in March 2023 following a corruption conviction. His imprisonment has drawn international attention and sparked debates about political motivations behind legal actions in Pakistan.
The collective plea from these cricketing legends underscores the deep concern for Khan’s wellbeing and highlights the broader issues regarding prisoner treatment in the country. As the situation develops, the focus remains on ensuring that Khan is granted the necessary medical attention and fair treatment he requires.
