Gael Monfils Exits ASB Classic After Upsetting Loss to Marozsan
In a surprising turn of events at the ASB Classic in Auckland, defending champion Gael Monfils was eliminated in the first round by Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan. The match concluded with a score of 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, spanning two hours of intense play. This defeat marks a disappointing repeat of last year’s tournament, where Monfils also lost to Marozsan in a closely contested match.
The atmosphere in the arena was electric as Monfils, aged 39, made his return as the defending champion, following his remarkable victory in 2025. That win had established him as the oldest titleholder on the ATP tour since 1977. Monfils began the match strongly, showcasing flashes of his vintage style with a powerful forehand to take the first set.
However, as the match progressed, Marozsan’s performance improved significantly. After securing an early break in the second set, he maintained control and eventually took the set, shifting momentum in his favor. Despite Monfils’ efforts to rally back, the Hungarian player clinched the final set, securing his place in the next round.
The match concluded with Monfils receiving a standing ovation from the crowd at Stanley Street, highlighting the respect and admiration he has garnered throughout his career. This marks a poignant moment as it could be the last time fans witness the French legend compete at this tournament.
Monfils’ early exit raises questions about his future in the sport as he contemplates retirement. Nonetheless, his legacy as a formidable competitor remains intact, and his contributions to tennis will be remembered fondly by fans and peers alike.
