New Bonus Points System Aims to Boost Batting Standards in Super Smash
The women’s Super Smash T20 competition will implement a new points structure this season, aimed at enhancing batting standards and promoting higher scoring matches. Teams can earn a single bonus point by scoring 150 runs or more, regardless of whether they bat first or second. Alternatively, they can achieve this point by maintaining a run rate that exceeds 1.25 times that of the opposition during the second innings. Notably, bonus points will not be awarded in the elimination and grand finals.
Ben Sawyer, head coach of the White Ferns, expressed optimism about the changes, indicating that they will encourage batting techniques that align with international standards. “It’s an exciting addition to the competition,” Sawyer stated. He emphasized that the new system rewards both aggressive batting and proactive bowling strategies, which are essential for success in the T20 format.
The aim of this initiative is to elevate the domestic game, thereby enhancing players’ readiness for international competitions. The upcoming T20 World Cup scheduled for June 2024 serves as a critical backdrop, with Sawyer noting, “We’re expecting high-scoring matches next year, so this is a great opportunity for our players to get ready for that.”
An internal analysis highlighted a significant shift in competitive T20 performances globally, showcasing increased scoring rates, boundary percentages, and first-innings averages. Sawyer acknowledged that while the bonus point structure is a step forward, it is not a comprehensive solution for improving batting standards. He stated, “Individual skill, tactical awareness, and coaching still play a major role.”
Support for the initiative extends beyond the national team. Jonny Bassett-Graham, head coach of the Wellington Blaze, voiced his approval, stating, “I think it’s a great development for the women’s competition.” He believes the change will drive the standard of cricket forward, resulting in more entertaining matches.
Bassett-Graham underscored the importance of adaptability, encouraging players to embrace the new structure as a means to develop skills necessary for advancing to international levels.
The Super Smash is set to commence on Boxing Day at Seddon Park, where Northern Districts will face the Auckland men’s and women’s teams. This season promises to bring a fresh dynamic to the competition, with a focus on enhancing the overall quality of play.
As the league prepares for its opening matches, the new points system stands as a significant development in New Zealand women’s cricket, paving the way for a more competitive and entertaining format.
