Newcastle Shocks Auckland FC with Late Victory Despite Red Card
Newcastle Jets pulled off a remarkable victory against Auckland FC on March 25, 2024, securing their second win of the season at Auckland’s home ground. The Jets achieved this feat while playing the majority of the match with only ten players after a key defender was sent off.
The match began with a flurry of action, as Newcastle quickly took control. Just seven minutes in, the visitors capitalized on their early momentum. A swift attack down the left flank led to a cross that found an unmarked Lachlan Rose, who calmly slotted the ball into the net to give Newcastle a 1-0 lead.
Auckland responded rapidly, with Jesse Randall equalizing in the 13th minute. He scored directly from a free kick, beating the goalkeeper at the near post. The excitement continued as Newcastle regained the lead just three minutes later. Will Dobson took advantage of a rebound from a shot that Auckland keeper Michael Woud could only parry, making the score 2-1.
The dynamics shifted midway through the first half when Newcastle defender Max Cooper was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. This left Newcastle to defend their slim lead while under immense pressure from Auckland. Despite their numerical disadvantage, the Jets showcased impressive resilience, managing to hold off Auckland’s advances and maintaining their lead through to halftime.
Auckland dominated possession throughout the match, controlling the ball for 72% of the game and registering 23 shots compared to Newcastle’s six. Despite this clear advantage, Auckland struggled to convert their chances into goals. The Jets’ defense, characterized by tenacity and commitment, managed to clear the ball off their line on multiple occasions, frustrating the home side.
As the match approached its conclusion, Newcastle sealed the win in dramatic fashion. In the final moments, a breakaway saw Lachlan Rose score his second goal of the match, tapping in from close range with Michael Woud out of position after venturing forward for a corner. Remarkably, Newcastle finished the game with only nine players due to injuries, yet they celebrated a hard-fought victory.
Following the match, Newcastle’s coach Steve Corica made two changes to his lineup from their previous victory over Western Sydney Wanderers. Felipe Gallegos and Guillermo May replaced Jake Brimmer and Logan Rogerson in the midfield, while Francis De Vries captained the side with Hiroki Sakai starting on the bench.
Despite the loss, Auckland remains at the top of the table with six wins, two draws, and two losses, holding a two-point lead over Sydney FC and the Brisbane Roar. Auckland FC’s next challenge will be against Macarthur FC in Sydney on Monday. Meanwhile, the Wellington Phoenix will face the Brisbane Roar on Saturday, looking to improve their standing in the league.
