Silver Ferns Face Must-Win Test Against Australia in Constellation Cup
The Silver Ferns are under pressure as they prepare for a crucial encounter against Australia in the third test of the Constellation Cup on October 4, 2023, at Globox Arena in Hamilton. Having lost the first two matches by a significant margin of 17 goals each, New Zealand must secure victories in both Hamilton and the subsequent match in Christchurch on October 7 to keep their hopes alive for the series title.
New Zealand’s struggle has been compounded by the absence of Ameliaranne Ekenasio, a former captain and experienced goal attack player. Ekenasio, who has 79 test caps, opted out of the series to focus on family and personal commitments. Her absence has left a considerable void in the team’s attacking strategy, particularly given her pivotal role in last year’s success, where she converted 55 goals from 64 attempts, achieving an impressive 86% success rate.
The Silver Ferns’ current line-up features Martina Salmon and Georgia Heffernan stepping into the goal attack position. Both players are relatively inexperienced at this level, with a combined total of just 12 test caps. Salmon, who debuted in the Taini Jamison Trophy series against South Africa in September, primarily plays as a goal shoot and has limited experience in the goal attack role. Heffernan, recalled to the national squad this year after a year’s absence, has shown potential but also faces a steep learning curve.
In assessing the situation, interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie acknowledged the challenges posed by Ekenasio’s departure. “We’ve lost a player with over 78 tests of experience and a captain, so absolutely we’re looking for people to own that job,” she stated. McCausland-Durie emphasized the need for players to step up and adapt quickly, especially given the high stakes of the upcoming matches.
Both Salmon and Heffernan have had their moments in the series thus far. Heffernan, who replaced Salmon during the match in Sydney, delivered a commendable performance by converting 10 from 11 attempts and providing 11 goal assists for teammate Grace Nweke. Their collaboration will be crucial as the Ferns attempt to regain momentum against a formidable Australian side.
As they head into this pivotal test, the Silver Ferns are not only fighting for the series but also seeking to restore confidence after a challenging start. With the Constellation Cup on the line, the team must harness their skills and resilience to compete effectively and avoid relinquishing the title to Australia for the twelfth time in the last 15 years. The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 1 from 15:30 local time, allowing fans to rally behind their team during this critical juncture.
