An expansion of the Sulzberger Indoor Centre in the Taranaki region has significantly improved facilities for local cricketers, particularly fast bowlers. The extension, completed in late September 2023, adds an impressive 12 meters to the venue, which is the region’s sole indoor cricket training facility. This enhancement allows bowlers to utilize full-length run-ups, a crucial aspect for their training.

The renovation included new turf, upgraded netting for the three training pitches, and improved lighting, all completed at a cost exceeding $200,000. Ryan Evans, general manager of Taranaki Cricket, stated that the transformation had been a long process, taking around four years to finalize.

Facility Upgrades Boost Training Opportunities

Evans expressed pride in the revamped facility, highlighting its importance for both current players and emerging talent. “The ability to come in off a full run-up is critical for fast bowlers,” he noted. “It’ll be really beneficial for our current crop and the next generation of developing players.”

Despite favorable weather encouraging outdoor training, feedback from users of the centre has been overwhelmingly positive. Evans anticipates that the facility will see substantial activity throughout the winter months and into spring. Originally opened in 2002, the Sulzberger Indoor Centre has been a vital asset for Taranaki cricketers at all levels.

Funding for the renovation was made possible through a combination of grants and support from the Sulzberger and Jordan families. The enhancements to the facility underscore a commitment to fostering cricket talent in the region, providing a modern and efficient training environment for athletes. As the new indoor season approaches, Taranaki’s cricketers are set to benefit from these upgrades, ensuring that they can train effectively regardless of weather conditions.
