Concert Celebrates 266 Years of Robert Burns’ Literary Legacy

A special concert will take place at the Waimate High School Perry Hall on January 31, 2025, to commemorate the 266th birthday of the esteemed Scottish poet, Robert Burns. The event, scheduled for 19:30 local time, celebrates Burns’ enduring legacy and his influence on literature and culture both in Scotland and around the globe.

Born on January 25, 1759, in Alloway Ayrshire, Robert Burns is widely regarded as one of Scotland’s most significant literary figures. His works have inspired countless artists and continue to resonate with audiences today. The concert aims to honor his contributions and introduce his poetry to new generations.

The evening will feature performances by the Midlands Choir, a talented group comprised of vocalists from the Mid and South Canterbury region. Attendees will also enjoy the musical stylings of the Waimate Highland Pipe Band, as well as various individual artists including Kate Schumacher, a Highland dancer, and vocalists Dougall McLachlan and Jean Barkman from Dunedin. Accompaniment on the piano will be provided by Clare Luckman, and violinist Ewan Penny will add to the musical variety.

Alongside the performances, guests will have the opportunity to taste traditional Scottish fare, including haggis, as part of the evening’s festivities. The event is open to the public, inviting all to celebrate the rich cultural heritage that Robert Burns represents.
