Green Party MP Benjamin Doyle Resigns from Parliament
Benjamin Doyle, a Member of Parliament representing the Green Party, has announced their resignation from Parliament, effective October 3, 2023. The announcement, made on September 5, comes after a challenging period marked by significant personal struggles and external pressures.
In a statement, Doyle expressed the need for healing and acknowledged that their journey could not continue within the confines of Parliament. “Over the past months, I have been on a journey of healing,” Doyle stated. They emphasized the impact of what they described as “baseless and violent accusations” and an “onslaught of hate, vitriol, and threats” directed not only at themselves but also at their whānau.
Doyle underscored the importance of family in their decision to resign. “Whānau is the most precious thing in the world. From the start, I have always said my child is my priority,” they noted. The MP revealed that their child had requested them to leave Parliament, which influenced their decision significantly. “I am leaving for them and for my own well-being,” Doyle added.
Despite stepping down, Doyle expressed pride in their service. “I leave Parliament with pride, and that is something nobody can take away from me,” they affirmed. Doyle highlighted the privilege of representing their community and thanked those who entrusted them with the role. “It was a pleasure and a privilege to represent and work for the communities that carried me here. I am so grateful for their trust and guidance,” they remarked.
Doyle also made it clear that their departure from Parliament does not mean they will stop advocating for important causes. “I will continue to fight for people and planet, just not from inside this House,” they stated. They emphasized a need for progress in making politics and democracy more inclusive. “Our politics, our democracy, and our Parliament should be a place for everyone,” Doyle said, adding that their experiences could serve as a learning opportunity for others.
Doyle plans to deliver their valedictory speech on September 18, marking a significant moment in their political career. As they prepare to exit Parliament, their focus remains steadfast on the issues that matter to them and their community.
This resignation underscores the complexities faced by public figures and highlights the importance of mental health and family priorities in political life. Doyle’s decision resonates within a broader discourse on the safety and support for politicians, particularly those who face hostility.
