Highlanders Suffer Defeat Against Reds in Queensland Clash
The Highlanders faced yet another setback in their Super Rugby campaign, losing to the Queensland Reds with a score of 31-14 on March 10, 2024. This defeat marks the Highlanders’ fourth loss in their last five matches, continuing their struggles in Brisbane, a city where they have secured only four wins in thirty years of competition.
The match began with an action-packed opening few minutes. Highlanders lock Will Stodart nearly crossed the try line but was unable to ground the ball. Shortly after, Reds winger Tim Ryan appeared to have scored the first try, only for the television match official to intervene, ruling a knock-on and granting the Highlanders a reprieve.
Despite this early escape, the Reds quickly found their rhythm. They exploited gaps in the Highlanders’ defense, leading to a remarkable moment from hooker Jack Taylor, who executed a stunning 50-22 kick. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, the opportunity was lost when Timoci Tavatavanawai fumbled a pass.
The Reds capitalized on their rivals’ mistakes, scoring a complicated try featuring a clever between-the-legs pass from Harry Wilson. Openside flanker Fraser McReight was in the right place at the right time to finish it off. The home team extended their lead soon after, with hooker Matt Faessler easily breaking through the Highlanders’ defense after a lineout drive.
The Highlanders managed to respond, showing signs of life when Taylor again sparked an attack by picking up the ball after a charge from Stodart. He found halfback Adam Lennox, who scored close to the posts, narrowing the gap. Yet, the Reds countered with another team effort, culminating in Ryan’s try after a well-timed delayed pass from Josh Flook to blindside Joe Brial.
At halftime, the Highlanders trailed 19-7. They emerged from the break determined to rally, with Tavatavanawai displaying impressive strength as he powered through multiple defenders. Lennox made a valiant attempt at the corner but was thwarted by a quality tackle.
As pressure mounted, the Highlanders scored once more. Rookie Lucas Casey broke through three tackles from ten meters out to register his first try for the club, bringing the score to 19-14. However, the Reds responded immediately, taking a quick throw-in from a 50-22 and allowing Ryan to set up Lukhan Salakaia-Loto for another try.
The match took a decisive turn when Vaiuta Latu capitalized on a Highlanders error close to the line, extending the Reds’ lead to 31-14. Despite the Highlanders’ continued efforts, including a near-try from TK Howden that was ruled held up by the television match official, they could not close the gap.
The final whistle confirmed the Highlanders’ defeat, leaving them to reflect on their performance as they prepare for their next challenge in the Super Rugby season. The Reds, on the other hand, celebrated a crucial victory, solidifying their position in the competition.
