Former All Black Angus Ta’avao Mourns Loss of Son Leo
Former All Black and Highlanders prop Angus Ta’avao is grieving the loss of his son, Leo Ta’avao, who passed away after a brief battle with complications related to a rare genetic disorder. Leo was born with partial trisomy 13, a condition that can lead to developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and various organ malformations. Ta’avao shared the heartbreaking news on social media, revealing that Leo spent his final moments in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit surrounded by family.
In an emotional post, Ta’avao wrote, “We are heartbroken to share that our beautiful boy Leo has gained his angel wings. You have left a giant Leo-sized hole in our hearts darling, we will miss you so, so much. Til we meet again our baby boy.” The post included cherished photos of Leo, capturing the spirit of his brief life.
Support from the Rugby Community
The rugby community has rallied around Ta’avao and his family during this difficult time. The Highlanders organization expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Kristyn and Georgie, during this heartbreaking time. Rest in peace Leo.”
Many notable figures from the sport have also shared their sympathies. Jack Taylor, a hooker for the Highlanders, and Ardie Savea, an All Blacks loose forward, described the loss as “absolutely heartbreaking.” Their messages convey the profound impact Leo’s passing has had on those connected to the sport.
The All Blacks organization also posted a tribute, saying, “RIL Leo. Sending our thoughts, prayers and love to you and your whānau, Angus.” Former All Black Israel Dagg reached out to Ta’avao, expressing his sorrow: “Brother, my heart aches for you all. I’m so sorry for your loss.”
A Legacy of Love
Despite the tragedy, the love and support from the rugby community highlight the strength of bonds formed through shared experiences. Many have taken to social media to share their own memories and express their condolences, underscoring the far-reaching impact Leo’s life had, albeit short.
The Highlanders recently celebrated Ta’avao’s return to the field, where he made his debut against the Crusaders at Forsyth Barr Stadium just last week. This moment of triumph has since been overshadowed by the family’s profound loss.
As Ta’avao navigates this grieving process, the messages of support from fans, teammates, and fellow players serve as a reminder of the unity that exists within the rugby community. The Ta’avao family continues to receive love and solidarity as they honor the memory of their beloved son, Leo.
