Police Investigate Mass Disorder in Auckland CBD; Multiple Injuries Reported
Police are investigating a mass disorder incident that occurred in Auckland’s central business district early this morning, December 28, 2023. Emergency services responded to reports of violence on Karangahape Road around 3:41 AM, where it is estimated that approximately 50 individuals were involved in the altercation.
In the wake of the incident, Auckland City Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying those responsible. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greaves stated that a significant police presence, including dog units, was deployed to manage the situation and disperse the crowds.
Three serious assaults were reported during the chaos, prompting an ongoing investigation. So far, police have arrested one individual but are seeking information on additional suspects involved in the incidents.
Details of the Assaults
The first serious assault took place outside the Crown Bar on Queen Street at approximately 4:15 AM. A 33-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was subsequently hospitalized. The police have assigned the incident a case number of 251228/4647 but have not yet identified the suspect.
Shortly after, at around 4:30 AM, another serious assault occurred on Cobden Street, just off Karangahape Road. A 27-year-old man was injured and also required hospitalization, with the incident being recorded under file number 251228/4462.
The final reported assault happened around 5:00 AM at a Mobil service station located at the corner of Karangahape Road and Ponsonby Road. A 46-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. A 21-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this assault and is due to appear in the Auckland District Court facing charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. This incident has been assigned the police file number 251228/4774.
Call for Witnesses
Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed or recorded the events to come forward. Those with information can contact the police directly at 105, referencing the relevant file numbers provided.
Detective Senior Sergeant Greaves expressed disappointment regarding the aggressive behavior displayed during the incident. “We will hold any and all offenders to account,” he stated, emphasizing the police’s commitment to ensuring public safety and addressing such unacceptable conduct.
As the investigation continues, the police hope to bring clarity to the incident and identify all parties involved in the disturbances.
