Sealord Implements Job Cuts as Nelson Seafood Operations Shift
Seafood company Sealord has announced the elimination of 48 jobs at its Nelson facility as part of a strategic shift towards seasonal operations. The company will close its wetfish factory in December, with plans to reopen in May, aligning with the hoki fishing season. This decision follows an earlier announcement regarding the closure of its coated fish factory, which resulted in 79 job losses.
According to Sealord’s Chief Executive, Doug Paulin, this seasonal approach is designed to preserve employment for 81 permanent and 400 seasonal workers, thereby minimizing the impact on the local economy. Paulin explained that the wetfish factory had been experiencing losses outside of the hoki season due to increasing costs, reduced fish volumes, and declining export prices.
Impact on the Nelson Region
The recent job cuts at Sealord reflect broader economic challenges faced by the Nelson region. Major employers, including Carter Holt Harvey, Griffin’s Snacks, and Kono, have also announced redundancies, contributing to a wave of job losses that is affecting the local community.
The strategic shift to a seasonal operational model aims to enhance financial sustainability and focus on profitable products during peak fishing periods. Paulin emphasized that while the changes are difficult, they are necessary for the long-term viability of the company.
While the transition may stabilize employment for a significant portion of the workforce, the immediate impact of the job losses has raised concerns among local residents and stakeholders. The Nelson region, known for its seafood industry, is now grappling with the realities of a changing economic landscape, as companies adapt to market pressures and fluctuating demand.
As Sealord moves forward with its plans, the focus will be on maintaining production efficiency and ensuring that the remaining workforce is equipped to meet the demands of the upcoming fishing season. The company reaffirms its commitment to the future of its Nelson operations, despite the current challenges.
