Search Intensifies for Missing Tramper Connor Purvis Near Lake Ōhau
A large-scale search operation is currently underway near Lake Ōhau, New Zealand, as authorities strive to locate missing 20-year-old tramper, Connor Purvis. Purvis was last seen climbing Mount Huxley around December 30, 2023, and concerns grew when he failed to return as planned.
Purvis had intended to descend through the Huxley River South Branch. When he did not make contact with family and friends as expected, they promptly notified the authorities. The New Zealand Police Search and Rescue teams are leading the extensive operation, collaborating with Land Search and Rescue units from Omarama, Oamaru, and Dunedin. Additionally, the Department of Conservation’s alpine rescue team from Aoraki/Mt Cook has been deployed to assist in the search.
Aerial support for the operation is being provided by Heliventures in Oamaru and Helicopter Line at Mt Cook. Search crews have already scoured huts and campsites throughout the rugged terrain, yet they have not yet found any trace of Purvis.
Authorities are urging anyone who has recently climbed Mount Huxley or has been tramping or hunting in the Huxley River South Branch between December 28 and January 2 to come forward. Sergeant Matt Sheat, the Otago Coastal Search and Rescue Coordinator, emphasized the importance of information sharing, stating, “We also want to hear from anyone who may have seen or spoken to Connor in the South Temple, Ahuriri, or Huxley valleys during that time.”
Purvis is described as having red hair and a handlebar moustache. Police officials have stated that even seemingly minor details could be crucial to the investigation. “It’s a large-scale search over a large area,” Sheat noted. “The smallest piece of information could make all the difference.”
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the police directly. Additionally, tips can be sent via email to [email protected]. The search for Connor Purvis remains a priority for local authorities, who continue to hope for positive news in the ongoing efforts.
