Young Croquet Player Mattie Clarkson Shines at U21 World Championships

Mattie Clarkson, the youngest member of the Howick Croquet Club, recently represented New Zealand at the U21 GC World Championships held in the United States. At just 19 years of age, Clarkson’s participation in the tournament highlights the inclusivity of croquet as a sport for all ages. The event took place at the esteemed Sarasota Country Croquet Club in Florida, marking the seventh edition of the championships.

According to Veneta Hansen from the Howick Croquet Club, Clarkson was one of five New Zealand players competing among a total of 28 participants from 12 nations. The tournament format included four blocks of seven players each, with the top 16 competitors advancing to the knockout stage. Remarkably, all five New Zealanders qualified for this stage, finishing at least third in their respective blocks. “This is an incredible result, having all five players in the final 16,” Hansen noted.

Competitive Spirit and Achievements

While Clarkson performed admirably, she did not advance to the finals of the competition. The championship was ultimately won by Levi Franks of Cashmere Croquet Club in Canterbury. Despite the outcome, the players were recognized for their competitive spirit, dedication, and exemplary behavior during the tournament.

Clarkson undertook the challenge of self-funding her trip, working hard to raise the necessary funds. The experience of competing at an international level and traveling to a new country was invaluable. She collected various memorabilia, including hat badges and shirts, which will serve as lasting reminders of her achievements.
