Community Unites for Vigil Honoring Landslide Victims in Tauranga
A gathering of approximately 1,000 people took place at Coronation Park in Tauranga on the evening of October 7, 2023, to commemorate the lives lost in the recent landslide tragedies that struck the area. The community came together to honor the victims, including a grandmother and her grandson who died in a landslide in Pāpāmoa, as well as six individuals who lost their lives when another landslide impacted a holiday park in Mount Maunganui.
As the community mourns, the search continues for four individuals who remain unaccounted for near the base of Mauao. To date, two victims have been formally identified, intensifying the sense of loss felt across Tauranga. Local resident Sandy Scarrow expressed her sentiments, stating that a “pall of sadness” has enveloped the community since the events unfolded.
