Drivers Urged to Exercise Patience as Holiday Traffic Increases
As the festive season approaches, authorities are advising drivers to remain patient amidst a surge in holiday traffic. The official holiday period in New Zealand begins on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, and extends through to Monday, January 5, 2024. This time of year often sees increased road use, raising concerns about potential accidents and fatalities.
Last year, the roads claimed the lives of 15 individuals during the Christmas break, prompting national road policing manager Superintendent Steve Greally to issue a warning. In an interview with Newstalk ZB, he emphasized the importance of remaining calm and tolerant while driving during this busy time.
Encouraging Safe Driving Practices
Superintendent Greally highlighted that patience is crucial among New Zealand drivers, especially during the festive season when the roads are significantly busier. “Patience is a really interesting thing for Kiwis,” he remarked, underlining the need for drivers to keep their cool when faced with heavy traffic.
The holiday season is a time for families and friends to come together, which often leads to increased travel. This year, authorities are urging holidaymakers not only to plan their journeys but also to account for potential delays due to traffic congestion.
To ensure safety on the roads, the police will be conducting increased enforcement measures throughout the holiday period. These efforts aim to deter reckless driving behaviors, including speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Past Trends and Future Outlook
In 2022, the Christmas and New Year’s holiday season resulted in 15 fatalities on New Zealand roads, a statistic that serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with increased travel during this time. Authorities are hopeful that with heightened awareness and enforcement, this number can be reduced.
Drivers are encouraged to follow basic safety guidelines, such as ensuring their vehicles are in good condition, avoiding distractions, and adhering to speed limits. Additionally, taking regular breaks during long journeys can help maintain focus and reduce fatigue, which is a common factor in road accidents.
As the festive season gets underway, the message from law enforcement is clear: exercise patience and prioritize safety on the roads. By doing so, holidaymakers can help ensure that this time of year remains joyful and free from tragedy.
