Fire Engulfs Abandoned Dunedin Rest Home, Extensive Damage Reported
A significant fire has severely damaged an abandoned rest home in Dunedin’s Mornington area. The blaze broke out at approximately 1am and consumed much of the three-storey building, which had remained vacant for years and fallen victim to vandalism. Fire crews are currently in the final stages of extinguishing the fire, having battled the flames since their arrival.
According to a spokesperson from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the building was fully engulfed upon their arrival. In total, seven fire trucks, a ladder truck, and a command unit were dispatched to the scene to manage the incident. As of now, four fire trucks and the ladder truck remain on-site as firefighters work diligently to control the situation. The spokesperson characterized the fire as “deep-seated,” indicating that it required extensive resources and effort to bring under control.
Firefighters have made significant progress, with much of the blaze extinguished. The incident highlights the ongoing issues surrounding the abandoned property, which has faced years of neglect and vandalism. Local residents have expressed concerns about the safety and security of such derelict buildings in the community.
Authorities are expected to conduct an investigation into the cause of the fire once it is fully extinguished. The situation serves as a reminder of the potential hazards posed by unoccupied structures, particularly those that have not been properly maintained.
As the investigation unfolds, further details regarding the incident and its implications for the community will likely emerge. Fire officials will continue to monitor the site to ensure that all remaining hotspots are adequately addressed to prevent any resurgence of the fire.
