The blaze is generating significant smoke, leading officials to advise nearby residents to remain indoors, close windows, and secure doors.
In an official statement, a spokesperson from Fire and Emergency New Zealand emphasized the potential health risks associated with the smoke. They urged people in the area to take precautions until the situation is under control. “The smoke is dense and may pose a health hazard,” the spokesperson noted.
Police have also arrived on the scene to assist with the situation. They have established cordons along Onehunga Mall, specifically between Arthur Street and Church Street, restricting access to ensure public safety as firefighters battle the flames.
