Molesworth Station Continues Battle Against Bovine Tuberculosis
New Zealand’s largest working farm, Molesworth Station, is continuing its fight against bovine tuberculosis (TB) after successfully declaring its cattle free of the disease for the first time in nearly 40 years. This announcement was made in April 2023, marking a significant milestone for the station, which spans from inland Blenheim to Hanmer Springs. Despite this progress, the farm remains under close surveillance as one infected animal has been identified.
The Operational Solutions for Primary Industries (Ospri) confirmed that the herd is still part of its “TBfree programme,” which includes stringent livestock movement restrictions. According to Ospri, ongoing surveillance has revealed a confirmed case of TB in a three-year-old animal. Testing is currently being carried out on the rest of the herd to ensure that the disease does not spread further.
Molesworth Station covers approximately 180,000 hectares and is renowned not only for its scale but also for its diverse agriculture and sheep farming operations. The station’s management is committed to maintaining the health of its livestock while navigating the complexities of TB management.
Ospri has been instrumental in the monitoring and control of bovine tuberculosis in New Zealand. The organization’s efforts are crucial in preventing the spread of this disease, which poses significant risks to both livestock and agricultural productivity. With the recent discovery of an infected animal, the situation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by farmers in managing animal health.
The latest developments highlight the importance of continuous surveillance and proactive measures in livestock management. Farmers across New Zealand are closely watching Molesworth Station’s situation as it could have broader implications for the agricultural sector, particularly in regions where TB has been a persistent issue.
As testing continues, the management of Molesworth Station remains hopeful that they can contain the outbreak and maintain their TB-free status moving forward. The commitment to rigorous health protocols reflects a broader strategy to safeguard New Zealand’s agricultural integrity and economic stability.
