Rotorua’s Mayor Aims to Reintroduce Hydroslides for Families
The city of Rotorua is on the verge of a potential revival of its once-popular hydroslide attractions, thanks to a concerted effort by Mayor Tania Tapsell. The absence of permanent hydroslides in the area, following the closure of Leisure World in 2008, has left a gap in family-friendly entertainment that the mayor is determined to fill.
During the 1990s, Rotorua was renowned for its leisure offerings, particularly its hydroslides that drew families from across the Bay of Plenty and beyond. Attractions such as the thrilling “Black Hole” slide made it a favored destination for those seeking summer fun. However, as visitor numbers declined, the theme park shut its doors, and the community has since lacked these vibrant recreational facilities.
In a recent statement, Mayor Tapsell expressed her commitment to restoring this aspect of Rotorua’s leisure landscape. “Families should have access to fun and safe recreational activities,” she said. “Bringing back hydroslides will not only enhance our tourism offerings but also foster community engagement.”
The mayor’s plan includes exploring options for new water slide installations that can cater to various age groups and preferences. She aims to collaborate with local businesses and stakeholders to secure funding and design proposals that align with community interests. The initiative is seen as a way to revitalize the local economy by attracting tourists and encouraging residents to engage in outdoor activities.
While specific timelines and funding details remain under discussion, Tapsell is optimistic about the project’s future. “We are hoping to gather community feedback and partner with experienced operators in the industry to ensure that we bring quality and excitement back to Rotorua,” she noted.
Reintroducing hydroslides is not only about recreation; it also underscores a broader vision for Rotorua as a vibrant family-friendly destination. As plans develop, the community is eager to see how this ambitious project will unfold, potentially reigniting the spirit of leisure that once characterized the city.
With a focus on enhancing tourism and increasing economic activity, the effort to bring back hydroslides is a key element of Tapsell’s broader strategy to rejuvenate Rotorua’s appeal. As the project progresses, residents and visitors alike will be watching closely to see how Rotorua can reclaim its status as a premier destination for family fun in New Zealand.
