India Triumphs Over New Zealand in World Cup Warm-Up Match
In a competitive warm-up match ahead of the World Cup, India secured a four-wicket victory over New Zealand in Bengaluru. This defeat marks the White Ferns’ second consecutive loss in their preparations for the tournament, following a previous setback against India A.
Match Overview
Due to rain, the match was reduced to 42 overs. New Zealand opted to bat first, setting a target of 232 runs for eight wickets. Captain Sophie Devine led the charge with a solid performance, scoring 54 runs. She was supported by Amelia Kerr, who contributed 40 runs, and Maddy Green, who finished not out on 49 runs.
Despite the challenging conditions, New Zealand managed to put a respectable total on the board. However, India’s left-arm spinner Shree Charani proved to be a key player, claiming three wickets and applying pressure throughout New Zealand’s innings.
India’s Response and Final Moments
India’s chase began strongly, with Harleen Deol retiring on 74 runs and captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributing 69 runs. Their partnership laid a strong foundation for the chase. Although India experienced a brief loss of momentum, losing four quick wickets in the middle overs, they ultimately crossed the finish line with eight balls to spare.
Bree Illing was a standout for New Zealand in the bowling department, taking two wickets alongside Jess Kerr, who also claimed two scalps.
After the match, Maddy Green expressed optimism despite the disappointment of the loss. She stated, “Disappointing not to get over the line, but the encouraging thing is we’re seeing some really good signs from the squad. Sophie batted brilliantly, and Breezy’s spell was excellent. We’re looking forward to our first game against Australia.”
The White Ferns now shift their focus to their opening World Cup match against Australia, scheduled for March 6, 2024, in Indore. As they prepare, the team aims to build on the positives from their warm-up matches and refine their strategy for the tournament ahead.
