Cabinet Approves Shared Medical Device Procurement for Health Agencies
The New Zealand Cabinet has approved a new framework for the procurement of medical devices, allowing both Pharmac and Health New Zealand to share responsibilities. This decision is aimed at addressing long-standing inefficiencies within the health sector, where device procurement has been described as “paralysed” for over a decade.
Pharmac Minister David Seymour highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting that the process has faced significant delays since a 2012 recommendation for Pharmac to take over device procurement was never implemented. The landscape shifted further when District Health Boards (DHBs) were merged into Health New Zealand, which also faced a rejected recommendation to manage procurement responsibilities.
Under the new agreement, Health New Zealand will take the lead on procuring less clinically complex items, including beds, lighting, personal protective equipment, and needles. This division of responsibilities is expected to alleviate some of the uncertainty that has plagued the industry.
The changes come at a critical time when the demand for efficient healthcare solutions is paramount. Many stakeholders in the medical field have expressed frustration over the lack of progress in device procurement, which has hindered the timely acquisition of essential medical supplies.
Minister Seymour emphasized the need for decisive action, stating, “The industry has been exasperated by the uncertainty.” With the Cabinet’s approval, both agencies can now work collaboratively to streamline the procurement process across more than 50 categories of medical devices.
This new structure aims to enhance operational efficiency and ensure that healthcare providers have access to the necessary tools for effective patient care. As the health sector continues to evolve, this collaboration may set a precedent for future initiatives focused on improving healthcare delivery in New Zealand.
