New Plymouth has elected a new mayor, with Max Brough securing a decisive victory over former deputy mayor David Bublitz. The progress results released on March 16, 2024, show Brough leading with a significant margin, effectively ensuring his election despite the formal declaration yet to be made by the New Plymouth District Council.

Brough’s campaign focused on implementing a rates cap and a commitment to serve only one term. With a majority of 5,745 votes, Brough’s message resonated with voters concerned about rising rates. His predecessor, Neil Holdom, stepped down after three terms in office, paving the way for a change in leadership that many constituents sought.

“It’s all a bit too much to take in,” Brough remarked following the announcement of the early results. He expressed gratitude and excitement, noting the need to reach out to the newly elected candidates, including former policeman and whistleblower John Woodward and regional councillor Moira Irving-George. Other notable newcomers include Damon Fox and Kerry Vosseler.

The election results also indicated a shift in the council, with Christine Fabish leading over Sarah Lucas by 178 votes in the Kohanga Moa ward. Additionally, Gina Blackburn maintained a narrow lead in the North Ward, while Amanda Clinton-Gohdes appears to be one of the casualties of this election, trailing by 149 votes.

In a broader context, voters in New Plymouth have rejected the continuation of Māori wards, a decision mirrored in nearby districts. Preliminary results showed 16,023 votes against maintaining Māori representation, while 11,520 votes supported it.

Over in South Taranaki, mayor Phil Nixon achieved a comfortable victory with a margin of nearly 3,000 votes against challenger Clem Coxhead. Most current councillors are expected to retain their positions, despite some tight races in various wards.

Stratford’s long-serving mayor, Neil Volzke, also continues to lead, holding a 255-vote advantage over his opponent Jono Erwood. Volzke has been in office since 2009, illustrating the stability of leadership in that district.

Meanwhile, Taranaki Regional Council elections have seen incumbents Mike Davey and Lee Kennedy securing their seats in the North constituency. The New Plymouth constituency is projected to welcome Susan Hughes, who leads the vote count, along with Tom Cloke and several other candidates.

As the election results continue to unfold, it is evident that the New Plymouth District Council may face significant changes. The final results, including special votes, are expected to be released by March 22, 2024. Voter turnout has been relatively low, with only 32% participation in New Plymouth compared to 44% in Stratford.

The outcome of this election highlights a clear desire for change among constituents, with Brough’s administration poised to tackle the challenges ahead, particularly regarding financial governance and community representation.
