Mel Parsons Reveals Personal Struggles in New Song ‘Don’t Leave the Light On’

New Zealand singer-songwriter Mel Parsons has unveiled her latest single, ‘Don’t Leave the Light On’, which draws on her personal experience of being in an abusive relationship. The song marks a significant moment in Parsons’ career, as she aims to share her story and shed light on the complexities of emotional abuse.
In her new track, Parsons explores the seemingly innocuous phrase, “Don’t leave the light on.” At first glance, it appears harmless. Yet, in the context of a psychologically abusive relationship, it takes on a much darker meaning. Parsons highlights how such phrases can become part of a pattern of relentless criticism and control, creating a toxic environment that is difficult to recognise from within.
Reflecting on her experience, Parsons shares that the relationship was not always negative. Initially, there were moments of joy and fun, which she often showcased to others. However, these positive moments were often overshadowed by a growing sense of unease, as the subtle yet damaging behaviours began to emerge.
“It wasn’t always bad. Sometimes it was great fun,” she recalls. “I’d revel in those moments, but they never lasted.” The singer describes how her partner, although charismatic in social settings, would subject her to harsh verbal attacks in private. These interactions, while not physically violent, left lasting emotional scars.
Parsons found herself grappling with the psychological toll of the relationship, often attempting to rationalise her partner’s behaviour. “I thought I could outsmart it,” she explains. “I could see and label the nasty stuff, and I would excuse it away with classic lines like, ‘but he had a terrible childhood’.”
Through her music, Parsons aims to resonate with others who may have faced similar struggles, offering a sense of solidarity and understanding. The release of ‘Don’t Leave the Light On’ serves not only as a personal catharsis for her but also as a poignant reminder of the insidious nature of emotional abuse.
As she prepares for the upcoming Aotearoa Music Awards, where she has been nominated for both the Taite Prize and Album of the Year, Parsons hopes her music will encourage conversations around these critical issues. By sharing her story, she seeks to inspire others to find their voice and acknowledge their experiences.
Parsons’ new single is a powerful addition to her discography, highlighting the resilience and strength that can emerge from confronting personal demons. As she continues to navigate her artistic journey, her commitment to authenticity and vulnerability remains at the forefront of her work.
