Filipino Worker Departs New Zealand After Immigration Failures
A foreign worker from the Philippines has been compelled to leave New Zealand due to significant failures by his immigration adviser in managing his residency application. Engaged to navigate the complex immigration process, the worker’s adviser, Philip Leslie Wharekura, provided what has been described as “atrociously poor advice,” ultimately leading to the rejection of the man’s application.
The worker, who held an essential skills visa, sought residency to secure a more permanent status in New Zealand, where he had established a life. His application was declined in May 2022 due to insufficient evidence regarding his relationship status with his partner. Despite the worker’s explicit request to exclude his partner from the residency application, Wharekura included them, which contributed to the application’s failure.
The case has raised serious concerns about the standards of immigration advisers in New Zealand and the potential impact on individuals seeking to build their lives in the country. The worker’s experience highlights the challenges faced by many foreign nationals navigating the immigration system, where reliance on professional advice can carry significant consequences.
Following the rejection, the worker was left with no choice but to leave New Zealand, marking the end of his aspirations for residency and stability. This incident not only underscores the critical importance of accurate and reliable immigration advice but also the human costs associated with procedural errors in immigration cases.
As New Zealand continues to rely on foreign workers to fill essential roles, the need for accountability and high standards in immigration advisory services becomes increasingly evident. The implications of this case may prompt calls for tighter regulations and oversight within the industry to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.
