The PlayStation Portal has emerged as the leading device for Remote Play on the PlayStation 5, surpassing all previous contenders including PCs, mobile devices, and older consoles such as the PlayStation 4. According to Takuro Fushimi, Senior Manager of Product Management at Sony, this handheld device has exceeded expectations in terms of user engagement since its launch nearly two years ago.

Speaking to TechRadar Gaming, Fushimi revealed that the Portal has become the “most widely used device” for Remote Play, demonstrating its popularity among gamers. He noted that prior to the Portal’s release, there were doubts regarding its potential demand due to its unique position as a dedicated Remote Play device. “The community’s response has been overwhelming,” he stated.

Statistics show that users of the PlayStation Portal are significantly more engaged than non-users, with the average gameplay session lasting about two hours. Fushimi emphasized that the Portal serves as a complementary device to the PS5, rather than a standalone product.

New Features and Upcoming Update

In addition to its growing usage statistics, Sony is set to enhance the Portal’s functionality with an upcoming update that will introduce cloud streaming capabilities for PlayStation Plus Premium members. This feature will enable simultaneous gameplay, allowing one user to play on the PS5 while another plays a different game on the Portal via cloud streaming—an option that was not previously available with Remote Play.

Fushimi explained that this update aims to create more opportunities for players to engage with their games. “Our goal is to provide more options for PS5 players to enjoy their games, attract more PS5 users to the PlayStation Portal and PlayStation Plus, and drive engagement even further,” he said.

With these developments, the PlayStation Portal is poised to strengthen its position within the PlayStation ecosystem, further enticing users to explore its features and capabilities. As the handheld device continues to gain traction, Sony remains committed to enhancing the user experience for its growing community of gamers.
