The Tauranga City Council has announced a full closure of Mauao for three nights, starting today, following multiple incidents of fireworks being set off on the sacred mountain. This decision comes as the council prepares to file a formal complaint with local police regarding the disturbances that occurred on the evenings of March 12, 13, and 14, 2024.

According to Laura Thomson-Bache, a strategic community relations adviser for the council, the organization is in the process of gathering evidence, including images of individuals allegedly involved in the fireworks incidents. “We will be providing all relevant information to the police. As this will soon be a police matter, we’re unable to answer questions about the investigation,” she stated in an interview with the Bay of Plenty Times.

In a statement released earlier today, the council confirmed that Mauao would be closed to the public from 19:00 to 05:00, starting from March 15 and continuing until the morning of March 18, 2024. This action is taken to protect the maunga and ensure the safety of visitors during this period.

Fencing and signage will be installed at all access points to inform the public of the closure. The council emphasized the cultural significance of Mauao, which is a revered site for the local Māori community. The fireworks incidents not only pose a safety risk but also disrespect the cultural values associated with the maunga.

The council’s decision reflects a commitment to preserving the integrity of Mauao and addressing safety concerns effectively. Local authorities are urging the public to respect the closure and to report any suspicious activity during this period.

As the investigation progresses, the Tauranga City Council aims to ensure that Mauao remains a safe and respected site for all visitors and the local community.
