Auckland FC Fights Ban of Mascot Tāma Ahead of Phoenix Clash
Auckland FC has initiated a petition to reverse the ban on its mascot, Tāma the Kingfisher, from Sky Stadium. The ban, imposed by the Wellington Phoenix, prevents Tāma from participating in a planned mascot race scheduled for March 16, 2024, during the double-header event for the Phoenix men’s and women’s teams. This decision has sparked controversy between the two football clubs ahead of their match.
The mascot race, a beloved halftime tradition, is intended to engage fans and add excitement to the event. Auckland FC has expressed strong disapproval of the ban, with a club spokesperson stating they are “appalled” by the decision. The spokesperson emphasized that Tāma represents an “innocent symbol” for the club and its supporters.
In a display of solidarity, Tāma was seen outside both Parliament and Sky Stadium on March 15, 2024, protesting the ban. The spokesperson described the situation as “some of the most egregious behavior” they have encountered, highlighting the importance of inclusive and family-friendly events in sports.
The ongoing situation has led to increasing engagement from fans, with many rallying behind the petition. The club is urging supporters to sign the document to demonstrate their discontent with the ban and to advocate for Tāma’s participation in the event.
As the match approaches, both Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix are gearing up for not only a competitive game on the field but also a public relations tussle off it. The outcome of the petition and the mascot’s fate remains uncertain, but the incident has certainly captured the attention of the football community.
The clash between Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix promises to be an exciting match, with both teams eager to secure a win. Fans are left wondering how the mascot saga will influence the atmosphere at Sky Stadium on match day, as the rivalry between these two A-League sides intensifies.
