A local man in Queenstown is embarking on an ambitious challenge by running a marathon every day throughout November to raise funds for the men’s health awareness campaign, Movember. Known as Brownie, he was inspired by fellow members at the Industrial Fitness gym, who participate in a fundraising challenge each year.

Turning 30 on November 1, Brownie decided to embrace this milestone with a unique twist. “What better way to bring in your 30s than 30 marathons?” he said. The timing aligns perfectly with the 30 days of November, making this personal challenge not only a celebration but also a significant contribution to a worthy cause.

Balancing Work and Running

Completing 30 marathons means running a total of over 1,260 km, which Brownie manages alongside his job as a manager at his family’s 86-year-old mattress business. His role allows him some flexibility, enabling him to run 42.2 km each morning before heading to work.

Brownie is aware that this challenge is not just about physical endurance; it is also a mental test. He anticipates needing to dedicate four to five hours daily to running and managing the logistics of the marathon schedule. “You’ve got to prepare yourself for four or five hours a day of running,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of injury prevention during his journey.

So far, the weather has cooperated since he began on November 1. However, he plans to shift to running on a treadmill at the gym if conditions become too harsh. “When you wake up in the morning, your joints feel it, but once you start running they seem to oil up a bit and feel fine … and I’ve got no blisters yet,” he remarked.

Community Support and Fundraising Goals

Since starting his challenge, Brownie has already raised close to his initial target of $5,000. Given the enthusiastic response from donors, he is considering increasing his goal to $10,000. This level of support showcases the community’s commitment to men’s health and the Movember campaign.

Brownie moved to Queenstown about 18 months ago and enjoys the outdoor lifestyle the resort town offers. He often runs hill trails with his dog and participates in events such as the Arrowtown Backyard Ultra and the Shotover Moonlight Mountain Marathon. His next significant event will be the Queenstown Marathon on November 11, marking the halfway point of his month-long challenge.

As he continues on this demanding journey, Brownie’s dedication to both his physical fitness and the cause highlights the impact that individual efforts can have on raising awareness and funds for important health initiatives.
