Southern Hoiho Rally to Defeat Tokomanawa Queens 75-68
The Southern Hoiho staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Tokomanawa Queens 75-68 at the Edgar Centre on March 15, 2024. After trailing for much of the match, the Hoiho surged ahead in the final quarter, showcasing resilience and determination to secure the victory.
Claire Jacobs ignited the Hoiho’s momentum with a crucial basket just a minute into the fourth quarter, narrowing the deficit to a single point. The crowd erupted as Paige Bradley followed up with a jumper, and Jacobs hit another three-pointer, propelling the Hoiho to a 69-60 lead. The team’s defensive tenacity shone through, limiting the Queens to just eight points in the final quarter.
Despite a rocky start, where the Hoiho struggled from beyond the arc, shooting only two from 18, they found their rhythm when it mattered most. The victory was a testament to their grit and ability to overcome adversity, demonstrating that they can bounce back from challenging situations.
Key Performers Drive the Comeback
Jessie Edwards emerged as a standout player, contributing significantly with 20 points and nine rebounds. Jacobs matched her scoring tally with 20 points and added three steals, while Bec Pizzey recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Taylah Simmons also played a vital role, scoring 14 points and displaying relentless energy throughout the game.
The Queens, starting strong, took an early 6-0 lead. Pizzey’s free throws ignited the Hoiho’s first points, but the Queens quickly extended their advantage to 18-7. Stella Beck and Lou Brown leveraged their experience, effectively navigating the Hoiho defense to secure points under the basket. The visitors maintained a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
As the game progressed, the Hoiho began to find their footing. Lil Dart’s assist to Jacobs caught the Queens off guard and initiated a series of scoring plays that highlighted the Hoiho’s offensive potential. Despite the Queens’ strong defensive efforts, including effective boxing out and rebounding, the Hoiho capitalized on their opportunities, gradually closing the gap.
Turning Points in the Second Half
The second half saw a shift in momentum. Edwards opened the scoring with free throws, and Bradley’s long pass to Edwards further narrowed the gap to 27-21. As Simmons and Pizzey applied pressure on the Queens’ center, Penina Davidson, the Hoiho’s defensive strategy began to pay off. Although the Queens momentarily regained a ten-point lead, the Hoiho responded with a flurry of points, led by Simmons and Jacobs.
Heading into the final quarter, the Hoiho trailed 60-56 but demonstrated newfound energy and confidence. Simmons’ hustle finally bore fruit as she converted key baskets, while Jacobs’ deep two-pointer brought the score to 60-58. With both teams battling fiercely, the Hoiho’s relentless effort ultimately propelled them to victory, solidifying their reputation as a formidable team capable of overcoming challenges.
With this win, the Southern Hoiho not only improved their standing in the league but also showcased the heart and spirit of a team that refuses to back down. Their performance serves as a reminder that determination and teamwork can lead to remarkable achievements on the court.
