Sushmita Sen’s Remarkable Heart Attack Recovery and Return to Work
Actress Sushmita Sen has shared her harrowing experience of suffering a heart attack in February 2023 while filming for the series Aarya Season 3. During an appearance on Divya Jain‘s podcast, she recounted the terrifying moment when doctors discovered a 95% blockage in one of her arteries. Remarkably, she chose to remain fully conscious throughout her life-saving surgery, which allowed her to maintain a sense of control in a critical situation.
Sushmita described the experience as transformative, stating, “When you suffer a heart attack and stay conscious through it, you truly understand how close you came to the other side of life.” This profound realization reshaped her perspective on life. “Everything in life is transient — even a heart attack. If I hadn’t survived it, there would be no story. But once you do, there’s no point dwelling on the past,” she reflected.
Despite the severity of her condition, Sushmita’s determination shone through. She insisted on staying awake during the surgery, driven by her “inner control freak” that resisted losing consciousness. “It was a choice — stay conscious and fight, or slip into unconsciousness and risk not waking up,” she explained. Throughout the procedure, she engaged in conversation with the medical team, urging them to expedite the process as her crew awaited her return.
The actress felt a deep responsibility toward the 500-member team involved in the production, whose livelihoods depended on the shooting schedule. “They were concerned about me, but I was concerned about them. You can’t shoot without me,” she emphasized, showcasing her commitment to her work and colleagues.
Following her remarkable recovery, Sushmita successfully lobbied for permission to return to the set just 15 days after her surgery. Her resilience paid off when Aarya Season 3 premiered on Disney+ Hotstar in November 2023, with the second part set to release in February 2024.
Sushmita Sen’s journey is more than just a story of survival; it embodies resilience, leadership, and an unwavering sense of duty. Her experience serves as an inspiration, demonstrating the power of determination and the importance of supporting those around us during challenging times.
