Representative Clay Higgins, a Republican from Louisiana, has become the only member of his party to vote against the release of government records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This decision comes in the wake of a shift in stance from former President Donald Trump, who previously opposed opening the case files connected to one of the United States’ most infamous scandals.

During an interview with CNN, Higgins stated, “I’m a vote against,” emphasizing his extensive research on the topic. He referenced Trump’s lack of a friendly relationship with Epstein, saying, “You can’t control who takes a picture with you.” Despite acknowledging this, Higgins maintained his opposition to the release of the files.

In a post on the social media platform X, Higgins elaborated on his reasoning, declaring that he has consistently held a “principled ‘NO'” position regarding the matter. He expressed concern that the proposed legislation would lead to harmful consequences for innocent individuals, stating, “If enacted in its current form, this type of broad reveal of criminal investigative files, released to a rabid media, will absolutely result in innocent people being hurt. Not by my vote.”

Higgins’ dissent stands out as the only opposition from a Republican voice amidst a broader bipartisan agreement to release the Epstein files. As the situation develops, further details are expected to emerge, potentially shaping the narrative surrounding the handling of such sensitive information.
