New Study Indicates Multivitamins May Slow Biological Ageing
Recent findings from a clinical trial in the United States suggest that daily multivitamin intake may have the potential to slow biological ageing in older adults. Researchers observed that participants who took multivitamins exhibited slower changes in their DNA-based epigenetic clocks, a measure often used to assess biological age. This study indicates that simple nutritional interventions could play a role in influencing the body’s ageing process.
Professor Lisa Te Morenga, from Massey University’s Centre for Public Health Research and Nutrition, discussed the implications of this research in an interview with Mike Hosking. While the findings are intriguing, she emphasized that multivitamins should not be viewed as a “magic pill.” The effects identified in the study are relatively minor, and the research does not yet provide evidence that these supplements can extend lifespan. Instead, it highlights changes in factors believed to correlate with longevity.
The clinical trial involved a diverse group of older adults who were monitored for changes in their epigenetic markers. This approach allowed researchers to examine how multivitamins might influence biological processes associated with ageing. The results revealed that participants who adhered to a daily multivitamin regimen showed less pronounced shifts in their epigenetic clocks compared to those who did not take the supplements.
Professor Te Morenga pointed out that while the research is promising, more extensive studies are needed to draw definitive conclusions about the long-term benefits of multivitamins on ageing. She cautioned against assuming that these supplements can replace a balanced diet or a healthy lifestyle.
The implications of this research stretch beyond individual health, potentially informing public health strategies aimed at improving the quality of life for older populations. As the global population ages, understanding how nutrition can impact biological ageing is becoming increasingly important.
In summary, while the study offers a glimpse into the potential benefits of multivitamins, it also underscores the need for a cautious approach. As Professor Te Morenga reiterated, the current evidence suggests that multivitamins may alter certain biological markers but does not confirm that they can lead to a longer life.
