A significant artistic transformation has taken place at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, with the unveiling of a striking sculpture by acclaimed Kāi Tahu artist Areta Wilkinson. The piece, titled Te Mauri o te Puna, now adorns the gallery’s forecourt, covering the bunker that provides access to the underground car park.

The sculpture features abstract metal shapes reminiscent of local plants, animals, and insects. Wilkinson explained that her work connects deeply with the nourishing spring referenced in the gallery’s name, which translates to “a spring of star-reflecting waters.” She elaborated, “In te ao Māori, a puna of water also represents spiritual and physical connections between the atua (ancestors) celebrated in Kāi Tahu creation narratives and life on earth.”

Wilkinson’s piece not only serves as a contemporary installation but also pays homage to her own toi Māori heritage, linking it to the ancestral rock art of Te Waipounamu, the South Island of New Zealand. The commission for this site-specific work will see it displayed for the next five years, offering an engaging experience for visitors.

A Dynamic Experience for Visitors

Lead curator Felicity Milburn expressed enthusiasm for the new installation, noting that Wilkinson adeptly navigates various artistic forms, including body adornment and large-scale public installations. “A flowing arrangement of tubular steel shapes encircles all four sides of the bunker,” Milburn described. “As you walk around it, you experience the work from different perspectives. It’s a dynamic piece, evoking the mauri, or unique vital essence, of a healthy spring, and also capturing the energy of all the flora and fauna that might surround it.”

The visibility of this new project enhances the gallery’s engagement with the community. Milburn highlighted the significance of the installation being seen by passersby, whether they are walking, driving, or enjoying lunch outdoors. “It offers a wonderful opportunity for people to engage with her work and will tempt them inside to see more,” she added.

With several other notable works by Wilkinson already held in the gallery’s collection, this new addition reinforces the cultural and artistic landscape of Christchurch. As the city continues to evolve, Te Mauri o te Puna stands as a testament to the rich heritage and contemporary artistry that defines this vibrant community.
