Cromwell Menz Shed Sells Custom-Built Shed to Fund New Community Space
Members of the Cromwell Menz Shed are selling a custom-built, transportable shed to support fundraising efforts for their new community meeting space on Bannockburn Rd. The organization, which has operated from converted containers at the local racecourse, has outgrown its current facilities due to increased membership and a wider array of projects.
Chairman of the Menz Shed charitable trust, Neville Hucklebridge, stated that the group has been actively raising funds for a new 12m×25m building, which is currently under construction. The organization has previously generated funds by building and selling items such as picnic tables, planter boxes, and trellis. This year, however, they embarked on a more ambitious project.
The newly constructed 3m×4.8m building is fully insulated and features double-glazing, carpet, and window coverings. According to Hucklebridge, the building is ready for transport, complete with lifting lugs for easy relocation. With the holiday season approaching, he noted that the shed could serve as valuable accommodation for visiting family and friends in Central Otago.
Beyond its potential as guest accommodation, the shed could also function as an excellent sewing room, yoga studio, or office space. Hucklebridge expressed gratitude to the local companies that contributed materials, which will allow the proceeds from the sale to go towards the group’s new home.
While members of the Menz Shed completed the majority of the construction themselves, they contracted out the electrical work. They are also responsible for the internal fit-out, including plumbing, and plan to undertake the interior painting of the new facility. Additionally, the group is preparing outdoor paving by stockpiling recycled pavers sourced from around Cromwell.
Hucklebridge emphasized that the new building will serve the entire community, providing a large meeting room that local groups can utilize. The Menz Shed’s ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to enhancing community engagement and support in Cromwell.
