New Zealand’s Best-Dressed Competitors Set Their Sights on Dubai
Danni Alfeld has quickly become a standout figure in New Zealand’s horse racing fashion scene, winning multiple best-dressed awards in less than three years. Her journey began when she clinched her first sash at Riccarton in Christchurch in 2023. Since then, the 26-year-old has triumphed in competitions across the country, including categories such as best dressed and best suited for women wearing suits. Now, she has set her sights on the prestigious Dubai World Cup Style Stakes.
Alfeld, who works as a nanny, credits her passion for fashion to her upbringing; her parents are horse trainers who introduced her to the racing world early on. “I love fashion and I love putting the outfits together,” she stated, emphasizing that these competitions allow her to express her unique style.
Revitalizing a Fashion Niche
Alfeld is among a growing number of entrants breathing new life into the world of best-dressed competitions in New Zealand. Events such as the Fashion in the Field at the Melbourne Cup also draw attention from both men and women. Participants not only have the chance to win substantial prizes, including overseas trips and gift cards, but they also foster connections in a surprisingly encouraging community.
Carena West, a seasoned competitor and judge, noted that these competitions create a niche fashion environment. “Competitors can put together and style a really beautiful outfit,” she said, adding that they often form friendships through their shared interests. This social aspect is particularly valuable for those who find it challenging to meet new people as they get older.
Stephen Mwaba, a truck driver from Christchurch, has also made his mark in the best-dressed competitions for men. Originally from Zambia, Mwaba attributes his interest in fashion to his father and uncle. He won the title of best-dressed man at Addington and Riccarton, showcasing his flair for stylish suits. “Fashion is one of the things I love to do,” he said, explaining that he often researches past winners to understand judges’ preferences.
Crafting Unique Looks
The creativity in these competitions is evident in the designs competitors choose. Anna Campbell, who has been participating for approximately 15 years, expressed how rewarding it is to combine different elements like hats, shoes, and bags. Her daughter, Eleanor Campbell, recently won best dressed at the Melbourne Cup’s Fashion on the Field, highlighting the family aspect of the competitions.
For many, such as Campbell and Mwaba, the process of selecting an outfit involves extensive planning. Campbell has assembled a vast collection of outfits and accessories, including hats made by renowned milliner Monika Neuhauser. Neuhauser creates custom pieces that can range from $280 for simple fascinators to over $800 for intricate designs. “A good outfit can be let down by a bad hat, but also the best hat can’t win if the outfit is no good,” she explained.
Mwaba emphasizes the importance of completing his look with accessories, from pocket squares to hats. He recalls a winning blue suit with a waistcoat and floral tie that captured the judges’ attention at Addington in 2021.
Participants also take note of seasonal trends while ensuring their outfits remain appropriate for the racing environment. West highlighted that racing fashion typically favors elevated day wear, steering clear of overly casual styles. “You don’t want to follow blindly because some things don’t really translate that well into race wear,” she advised.
New Zealand competitors often excel in Australian competitions, known for their creativity and willingness to take risks. Their innovative approach to outfits sets them apart, making them formidable contenders in the challenging best-dressed landscape.
As Alfeld prepares for the Dubai World Cup, she embodies the spirit of a community that celebrates fashion and camaraderie. With her sights set on even greater achievements, she joins a vibrant group of individuals dedicated to the art of dressing to impress in the world of horse racing.
