Khawaja Faces Crucial Decision as Ashes Approach
Usman Khawaja’s cricketing future hangs in the balance as he returns to Brisbane following an injury-riddled tour of the Caribbean. At 38 years old, the question has emerged: is it time for Khawaja to consider retirement from Test cricket after 85 matches in the baggy green?
After Australia’s third Test against the West Indies in July, where the hosts bowled out the opposition for just 27 runs, coach Andrew McDonald expressed his support for Khawaja, despite the batter’s lackluster performance of just 117 runs at an average of 19.5 during the tour. “We see him playing a part during the summer,” McDonald stated, emphasizing Khawaja’s experience and readiness to contribute to the team.
Yet, the situation has become more complicated. In Perth, Khawaja could not take the field due to back spasms, raising concerns about his physical condition. According to Cricket Australia, these spasms were not a result of his recent golfing outings but rather a new injury sustained during the first day of play.
Travis Head’s remarkable fourth-innings century has added to the selectors’ dilemma. Having volunteered to open the batting in the absence of David Warner, Head’s performance has put Khawaja’s selection for the upcoming Ashes Test in Brisbane, starting on December 4, 2023, into question. McDonald was noncommittal when asked about Khawaja’s potential participation, stating, “It’s a long way out, a lot of information to gather between now and then.”
Khawaja’s impending birthday on December 17 marks a significant milestone, as he turns 39. Historically, only 25 Australians have played Test cricket after their 39th birthday, with no recognized batter achieving this feat since Bob Simpson in 1977. The realities of aging—diminished eyesight and slower reflexes—cannot be overlooked.
His recent performance statistics also raise concerns. Since his return to the Test team in 2022, Khawaja has averaged a respectable 46.58 over 41 matches. Yet, since June 2023, he has achieved only one score over 90 in 45 innings, with his most notable performance being a double century against Sri Lanka. His average of 24.35 over the last ten home Tests further complicates his position.
The selectors face a challenging decision. Dropping opener Jake Weatherald, who had disappointing scores in his debut, could be seen as harsh and does not address the broader issue of Khawaja’s form against high-quality pace bowling. The whispers surrounding Khawaja’s recent golfing activities, including back-to-back rounds leading up to the Test, have not helped his cause.
Critics such as former player Mitchell Johnson have suggested that Khawaja’s recreational choices may have contributed to his injury. “From the outside, it doesn’t look great,” Johnson remarked in a column for The West Australian, implying that Khawaja’s preparation could be questioned.
Despite the scrutiny, Khawaja’s love for golf remains evident, with Australian golfer Min Woo Lee acknowledging the need for balance in athletes’ lives. “Hopefully that’s not the reason for [his injury] … but good on him. We all love golf,” Lee commented.
As the Ashes series progresses, the selectors may consider a farewell Test for Khawaja at the Gabba, where he could bat at No. 5. His experience in pink-ball Tests, where he averages 35.93, could play a vital role. However, many may argue that a batting order featuring Head, Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Beau Webster, and Alex Carey could present a stronger challenge to the English bowlers.
With a busy schedule ahead, including matches in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney, speculation around Khawaja’s future is likely to intensify. He has a commentary deal lined up with Fox Cricket, which suggests a smooth transition to a broadcasting role should he step away from playing.
In the coming weeks, Khawaja’s decision could shape not only his career trajectory but also the composition of the Australian team as they strive to maintain their lead in the Ashes series.
